Safe Isolation Provider (SIP)

Electrical Work That Protects Today and Powers Tomorrow

What is Safe Isolation Provider?

A Safe Isolation Provider (SIP) is a Meter Equipment Manager (MEM) accredited under the Retail Energy Code (REC) in the UK, authorised to de-energise and re-energise electrical supply points to allow safe electrical work on a customer’s equipment.

Created to streamline the process, SIPs offer property owners a single point of contact for these isolation works, which can include installing isolator switches or performing other electrical upgrades like those for EV chargers, without needing direct involvement from the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) or the electricity supplier.

Note: Most electrical contractors arent SIP, they usually bring in companies like iCD to carry out the “safe Isolation” before they can carry out their electrical works.

What is Safe Isolation?

Safe Isolation is the process electricians use to ensure that electrical circuits are completely de-energised and cannot be switched back on while work is being carried out. It’s a critical safety procedure designed to:

  • Protect electricians and anyone on-site from electric shock
  • Prevent accidental energisation of equipment during maintenance or repairs
  • Ensure compliance with UK Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and Health & Safety standards

Why Choose a SIP-Accredited Contractor?

Not all electrical contractors follow strict Safe Isolation practices. By choosing ICD Energy – a certified Safe Isolation Provider – you benefit from:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Trusted Answers from Our Experts

It prevents electric shock, serious injury, or death by ensuring circuits are proven dead before anyone works on them.

Identify the circuit, isolate it, lock and label it, then test with an approved voltage indicator and proving unit.

Only Electrical Metering Operatives (EMO’s) should perform safe isolation procedures.

  • De-energise and Re-energise:
They safely shut off and restore the electricity supply at the meter point.
  • Facilitate Electrical Work:
This isolation allows other electrical contractors to safely carry out work on property electrical systems, such as installing or upgrading equipment like EV chargers or solar panels.
  • Install Isolator Switches:
SIPs can install local isolation switches, providing a convenient point for future isolation needs.
  • Simplified Process:
Prior to SIPs, a customer needing isolation had to involve the electricity supplier and their chosen MEM.
  • Customer Choice:
SIPs allow the property owner to directly appoint their preferred accredited provider.
  • Increased Flexibility:
The system provides more flexibility and easier access for customers requiring isolation works for new installations and other electrical maintenance.
  • Accreditation: An organisation must be an accredited Meter Operator Agent (MOA) and an Electrical Metering Operative (EMO) to apply to become a SIP.
  • REC** Approval:** They must be approved and registered by the Retail Energy Code (REC).
  • Training: Individuals working for a SIP need specific training and awareness of the legal requirements and practical steps for safe isolation, including the use of locking devices and voltage testing.
  • Property Owners:
Homeowners and commercial property managers can use SIPs to get electrical isolation work done more efficiently.
  • Electrical Contractors:
SIPs work alongside contractors, removing the previous barrier of needing the DNO or supplier for meter point isolation.
  • Renewable Energy Installers:
As demand for EV chargers and other renewable energy technologies grows, SIPs are crucial for enabling their safe installation.
