EV chargers for the home come in a range of different brands, specs and features. If choosing a charger is new to you, don’t worry, we are here to help make things simpler. We won’t overwhelm you with jargon – we will explain things using everyday language so you can book an EV installation with confidence.

The difference between tethered and untethered

A tethered charger comes with the cable attached. To charge your vehicle, just unwind the cable and plug it into the car or van. Pros – easy to use and everything is stored in one place.

Cons – you are restricted to one model of charger so if you upgrade your car, you might have to change the charge point too.

Untethered chargers are essentially just a socket. To charge your vehicle, you must have a separate cable. Pros – more flexible for use with different vehicles as long as they all have their own cable. Cons – You need to remove and store the cable after charging for safety.

Solar enabled

If you currently have solar panels or think you might have them installed soon, look for the solar feature on the charger you choose.

OZEV Approved

Chargers that have been approved by the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles are eligible for the grants offered by the Government.

Remote management

Smart chargers connect to apps where you can monitor the progress of the charger remotely and stop or start the process. They can also help to optimise cheaper electric tariffs. The apps are available on smartphones or tablets.

Load balancing

This feature is useful if more than one vehicle is charging at the same time. It makes sure the electric system doesn’t get overloaded.

Finish, colour, and style

If the way your EV charger looks is important to you, there is a choice of finish and colour. Each brand has a slightly different style so take a look at this before making your final decision. After all, the charger is likely to be in situ for many years.

The price

The price of each EV charger is slightly different. The more features you opt for, the higher the cost in most cases. Compare prices to keep within your budget.
