A Comprehensive Guide to Reading and Understanding Your Smart Meter
Smart meters have transformed the way we interact with our energy consumption, providing real-time insights that enable us to make informed decisions for a greener, more cost-effective future.
This guide will walk you through the simple steps of reading your smart meter, from locating it to understanding the displayed data. Plus, if you need manufacturer-specific details, we’ll show you how to reach out to your utility provider for assistance.

Where to find your meter

Begin by finding your smart meter’s physical location. In a lot of cases, it’s installed outside your home in a white box on the wall. If it’s indoors, check under the stairs, kitchen cupboards, above the front or back door or in the cellar. If you’re having trouble locating it, your utility provider will be happy to guide you.
Find the Display Information
Smart meters have digital displays that cycle through screens. Look for the main display showing your real-time energy consumption data. If the display isn’t active, you might need to press a button on the meter to illuminate it.
The main display will provide key usage metrics:
- Energy Usage (kWh): This indicates your total kilowatt-hour electricity consumption, a fundamental figure for tracking energy use.
- Gas Usage (if applicable): If you have a gas smart meter, the display will show gas usage in cubic meters (m³).
- Time and Date: The meter’s display also presents the current time and date, assisting in monitoring usage patterns.

How to Understand Unit Measurements
Grasp the unit measurements for energy consumption:
- Electricity (kWh): A kilowatt-hour represents the energy consumed using 1,000 watts for an hour. It’s the standard unit for electricity usage.
- Gas (m³): Cubic meters gauge gas volume. Your gas provider uses this unit to calculate your bill.
Track Usage Patterns
Regular readings help you understand usage patterns. Note readings at different times to identify peak usage. Use this insight to adjust habits and save money.
Monitor Your Usage Online
Many utility companies offer online portals or apps for detailed energy monitoring. Sign up if available. Online tools often provide graphs and historical data to visualise usage patterns.
